William Joseph Merrill was born in 1926 in Virginia. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Lee Merrill, who resided at 5600 Essex Circle, Norfolk, Virginia.

William served as a Hospital Apprentice Second Class (service number 6598073) in the United States Naval Reserve (USNR). At a young age, he displayed a profound commitment to his country by enlisting in the Navy during World War II.

USS LST-531 and Exercise Tiger

During Exercise Tiger , William was aboard the USS LST-531 when his ship was attacked in the early hours of April 28, and sunk by German E-boats in the English Channel. This tragic event led to significant loss of life, including William’s.
